Surveillance reinforced at El Médano Beach for Spring Break

Los Cabos, Baja California Sur.- Authorities are strengthening security at El Médano Beach in Cabo San Lucas, deploying around 40 workers from the Federal Maritime-Terrestrial Zone (Zofemat), including cleaning staff, security personnel, and lifeguards, to prevent incidents and protect the more than 70,000 spring breakers expected to visit Los Cabos.

In an interview with El Sudcaliforniano, Rafael Álvarez Munguía, coordinator of the Federal Maritime-Terrestrial Zone (Zofemat) in Los Cabos, said that the initial expectation was to receive more than 55,000 students, but the figure increased due to security issues that arose in Jalisco. As a result, the tourist destination Puerto Vallarta experienced a decline.

“We are already prepared and reinforcing the key points at El Médano, with the presence of four lifeguards, and we will add three more, meaning we will have seven maritime rescue experts,” said Rafael Álvarez Munguía, Zofemat coordinator in Los Cabos.

For rescue operations, there are three jet skis, plus one additional jet ski provided by the company Omega Sports, which will remain on alert patrolling from La Hacienda Beach to Ocho Cascadas, the Zofemat official noted.

In addition, the official said there will be a special cleanup and surveillance team of 15 people working from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., increasing the total to 32 personnel assigned to that same area, supported by a truck and an ATV.

Likewise, he said they will be working jointly with Cabo San Lucas firefighters and rescue teams, the Red Cross, Civil Protection, Fiscal Inspection, and Public Security, among other agencies.

He noted that during the first week, which is the slowest, they expect 10,000 to 15,000 young visitors; the second week, 15,000 to 20,000; the third and fourth weeks are the busiest, with the possible presence of more than 30,000 students; and attendance declines during the fifth week.
